NEWS RELEASE
FARMINGTON, N.Y. – Tin Cup Chalice wore down pacesetter Scary Trip and drew off to a one and three-quarter length victory in the eighth renewal of the $50,000 Finger Lakes Juvenile on Saturday. The New York-bred gelding completed the six furlong sprint for 2-year-olds in a final time of 1:11.25.
The Michael Lecesse-trainee prepared for the stake by winning a maiden race by fifteen and one-quarter lengths over a sloppy surface at Finger Lakes on October 23. "He was training great", said Lecesse. "Omar (Camejo) had plenty of confidence in him."
Tin Cup Chalice, owned by Lecesse and Scott Vanlaer, is a half brother of 2004 New York Derby winner Don Corleone. He is expected to make his next start on December 9 in the $65,000 Damon Runyon Stakes at Aqueduct. Lecesse indicated that his pedigree is well suited for the one mile and one-sixteenth distance of the event for New York-bred 2-year-olds.
Jockey Omar Camejo earned his first Finger Lakes stakes win by taking Saturday’s feature race. Camejo’s two other career stakes victories were accomplished in 2003 with Petrina Above in Florida.
Tin Cup Chalice was the post time favorite and returned $4.70, $3.30 and $2.50. Say Toba Sandy was placed second after being impeded at the start and paid $4.30 and $2.30. Scary Trip was disqualified from second and placed third due to the early infraction and paid $2.70.
The eighth running of the $50,000 Finger Lakes Juvenile was the final stake of the 2007 live thoroughbred season at Finger Lakes Gaming and Racetrack. Post time for the first race on live racing days will be at 12:15 p.m. for the remainder of the meet which is scheduled to conclude on Saturday, December 1.
