The quickest time of opening week was recorded by I’m a Yankee in the sixth race on Tuesday. The seven time winner completed the four and one-half furlong distance in a time of :52.45 under jockey Gabriel Suarez. The 5-year-old gelding scored the victory in his first start under the care of trainer Lavern Bowman. The New York-bred was claimed by Bowman for $6,250 while running at Gulfstream Park in Florida.

Zipperoo drew away to a three and one-half length win in Tuesday’s feature race for trainer H. James Bond. The 4-year-old gelding made amends for a double digit loss in his only other Finger Lakes start on November 30, 2007. Jockey John Grabowski was aboard the $172,848 earner, who finished in a time of :52.47 for the four and one-half furlong distance. Grabowski scored a riding triple for the day with the eighth race victory.

New Jockey News: Dennis Carr had a successful start to the 2008 meet, riding three winners during the first two days of racing. Carr was dismounted after the running of the first race on Tuesday, but returned to ride the rest of the day. Raymond Torres visited the Winner’s Circle during his first day of riding at Finger Lakes. Torres guided Big Lucky Lady to a three-quarter length victory in the ninth race on Monday. Luis Garcia directed his first ever Finger Lakes mount to an in-the-money finish on Monday. Valley Gal, who was ridden by the 10-pound apprentice, rallied to be second in the third race.
