A look back and ahead…
Citrine was a four and one-quarter length winner of the Parker Buckley Memorial Race on Sunday despite stumbling at the start. She was sent to the front by jockey John Davila, Jr. after the poor beginning and never looked back while completing the six furlong distance in a time of 1:11.74. The 6-year-old mare visited the winner’s circle for the eighth time in her career increasing her total lifetime purse earnings to $147,997 for previous trainer Chris Englehart. The chestnut New York-bred moved to a new barn after being claimed by trainer Joe Marino for $10,000. The event was named after former Finger Lakes jockey Parker Buckley who passed away on Tuesday, August 19. A moment of silence was held after the running of the eighth race in honor of Buckley.
Fly to Me defeated Sweet Lorena by a narrow margin on Saturday after beating her rival by a head in the $50,000 Arctic Queen Handicap on August 2. Sweet Lorena overcame a slow start but fell a nose short after the two competitors engaged in a spirited duel in the late stages of the one mile seventy yard route. Fly to Me’s victory added to trainer Michael Lecesse’s successful week, which was highlighted by a victory in the $150,000 Albany Stakes by Tin Cup Chalice on Wednesday at Saratoga Race Course. With the win, Tin Cup Chalice received an additional $250,000 bonus for sweeping all three legs of the Big Apple Triple for owners Lecesse and Scott Vanlaer.
Longshot of the Week: Brooke Haley rallied in the stretch under jockey Joel Sone to score her first win since June 8, 2007 in Friday’s fourth race. The 26-1 longshot was the first of two horses saddled by trainer Jose Cabrera to win at double digit odds on the card. Barco took the eighth race at odds of 10-1 for the veteran conditioner.
