A look back and ahead…
· Tommasi received the early pace he needed to rally down the center of the track and take the Eastview Handicap on Sunday. The 5-year-old gelding was rated behind the early pacesetters by John Grabowski before being put in gear to win the eighth race by two and one-quarter lenghs. The H. James Bond-trainee finished second in last year’s running of the $50,000 Genesee Valley Breeders’ Handicap, his only other Finger Lakes start.
· Johnie Bye Night cruised to a six and one-half length victory in the $50,000 George W. Barker for the second consecutive year under John Davila, Jr. The final time of 1:09.71 was the fastest of any six furlong race this season. His trainer Charlton Baker also saddled two other horses with the quickest 2007 times this week. Both Strong Case with a time of :57.64 (five furlongs) and Special Jet with a time of 1:03.96 (five and one-half furlongs) established new marks on Friday.
· Longshot of the Week: Another Sweetie made her first start of the meet a winning one on Friday. The 6-year-old mare trained by Michael Milian took advantage of quick early fractions and closed ground to take the ninth race by four lengths. It was the second victory of the day for her rider Joel Sone who also visited the winners circle in the fourth race aboard Jet’s Role.
