A look back and ahead…
The disqualification in the 35th running of the $163,000 New York Derby on Saturday marked the first time since 1987 that an inquiry decided the winner of the annual stake. Embrace’s Sybling was awarded the victory that year after Jazzing Around was placed second for interference.
Trainer Phyllis Shetron will be honored with the Dogwood Dominion Award for her involvement with the Finger Lakes Thoroughbred Adoption Program. Shetron will receive $5,000 and a bronze statue of Dominion, a former multiple stakes winner, at an August 1 luncheon at Saratoga Springs. The award is given annually to an unsung hero in thoroughbred racing. She was instrumental in the rescue of 14 horses in Pennsylvania.
