NEWS RELEASEFARMINGTON, N.Y. – Winning Move Stable’s Gold Like U drew away to a six and one-half length win in the 10th running of the $50,000 Arctic Queen Handicap at Finger Lakes Gaming and Racetrack on Saturday. The 6-year-old mare completed the six furlong sprint for New York-bred fillies and mares 3-year-olds and up in a final time of 1:10.76.
The Gary Contessa-trainee was kept close to the early pace set by Miss Silver Image. Then put away that rival and scored the victory in a hand ride by Jockey John Grabowski. "I knew the race was ours especially on the turn", said Grabowski. "This was an easy race for her."
It was the eleventh career win for Gold Like U, who now has a total of $389,403 in lifetime purse earnings. It was the second stakes victory for the bay New York-bred who also took the $72,000 Union Avenue Stakes at Saratoga in 2006.
She was the popular choice in the race and paid $3.60, $2.20 and $2.10. Coney Island Baby was second and returned $4.10 and $4.30. Watral’s Dahlia rallied to be third and paid $3.20.
The next stakes race at Finger Lakes Gaming and Racetrack will be run on Sunday, August 12. The $50,000 Leon Reed Memorial Handicap, a 6-furlong sprint for New York-bred 3-year-olds and up, is scheduled for that day.
