FARMINGTON, N.Y. – Candy Stables’ Scary Bob outlasted Pinky Freud to win the second running of the $50,000 Leon Reed Memorial Handicap. The 6-year-old New York-bred was pressured early in the race by that rival before drawing off to a two and one-quarter length victory.
He zipped the first half mile in :44.32 and hit the five-eighths pole in :56.58 before pulling awayfrom the other competitors. The chestnut gelding finished the six furlong sprint for New York-bred 3-year-olds and up in a time of 1:10.36. The three time stakes winner was ridden to victory by John Davila, Jr. for trainer Chris Englehart.
"I thought he might need a race", said Englehart. "He got the early jump and had enough in the stretch."
It was a special victory for Englehart, who is a relative of the late Finger Lakes employee that the race was named in honor of. "This is emotional", said Englehart. "I love him and miss him very much."
It was the ninth win in the career of Scary Bob who has a total of $305,280 in lifetime purse earnings. He was the third choice in the wagering and paid $7.80 and 3.30. Pinky Freud held second and returned $2.80. Long Lost Pal was third with show wagering eliminated after the scratches of Johnie Bye Night and Mr. Bourbon Street.
The next stakes race at Finger Lakes Gaming and Racetrack will be run on Saturday, August 25. The $50,000 Jack Betta Be Rite Handicap, a one mile and one-sixteenth route for New York-bred fillies and mares 3-year-olds and up, is scheduled for that day.
