A look back and ahead…

Sly Diamond Jim became the first five-time winner of the 2007 season after taking Saturday’s eighth race. The 4-year-old colt, trained by Chris Englehart, has never suffered a defeat since his arrival to Finger Lakes. His dominance in allowance conditions continued with a three and one-quarter length victory under jockey John Davila, Jr. in a final six furlong time of 1:10.27.

Races restricted for 2-year-olds were run at Finger Lakes over the weekend. Devi won a five and one-half furlong sprint for fillies on Saturday in a time of 1:07.54. Jeremias Flores rode the Ralph D’Alessandro-trainee to the three and one-half length victory. Mark’s On Attack ran slightly quicker in Sunday’s heat for males. The New York-bred gelding finished the same distance in a time of 1:07.38 under jockey Michael Davila. He had to overcome a wide trip to win the third race by three-quarters of a length for trainer James Wright. New York-bred 2-year-olds will take center stage on September 3 in the $100,000 Lady Finger Stakes and the $100,000 Aspirant Stakes.

News and Notes

Jockey News: Ricardo Feliciano recently joined the Finger Lakes jockey colony after riding at Thistledown in Ohio. He has won 40 stakes races during his nine year career. The 31-year-old journeyman is closing in on a milestone with 992 lifetime victories. Jeremias Flores was dismounted after crossing the wire during the running of Sunday’s eighth race. Flores walked off under his own power and rode in the ninth. John Davila, Jr. fell while participating in Monday’s fourth race. The leading jockey was uninjured and continued to ride the rest of the day.
