FARMINGTON, N.Y. – Jockey John Grabowski visited the winners circle for the 3,000th time in his career Saturday afternoon at Finger Lakes Gaming and Racetrack. He became only the third Finger Lakes jockey to hit the milestone after guiding Diamond Hard Cut to a two length victory in the fourth race.
The six-time leading jockey sent Diamond Hard Cut to the early lead and never looked back to score the win in a final time of 1:43.22 for the one mile and 40 yard distance. It was his 415th victory aboard a horse saddled by his friend M. Anthony Ferraro. "I think he’s still as good as anyone here", said Ferraro. "He’s a good athlete." The combination teamed up for another memorable win at Belmont Park on October 21, 2001. Impeachthepro upset heavily favored Say Florida Sandy in the $125,000 Hudson Handicap that day.
Grabowski’s 233 victories in 2000 and nine stakes victories in 2001 are Finger Lakes single season records. His 73 career stakes wins at "the thumb" is also a record. Earlier this year, he passed Kevin Whitley to become the second all time leading Finger Lakes jockey.
The 45-year-old from Coalinga, California returned to ride this year after being sidelined for a good portion of the 2006 meet with a career threatening injury. He missed the remainder of the season after suffering a fractured pelvis from a spill that occurred before the running of the first race on August 6.
The milestone victory occurred five days after he won his 80th stakes race aboard By the Light in the $137,925 Lady Finger Stakes. "This feels great", said Grabowski. "This was an unbelievable week."
Live racing continues at Finger Lakes every day except Wednesday and Sunday. First race post time is scheduled for 1:10 p.m. each racing day until October 29. The live action will then begin at 12:15 p.m. until the season concludes on Saturday, December 1.
In addition to live and simulcast thoroughbred racing, Finger Lakes Gaming and Racetrack features over 1,000 video gaming machines and several dining options within its 28,000-plus square foot gaming floor that is open 10 a.m. to 2 a.m., daily.
