A look back and ahead…
Brocco Valley shook loose on the front end under jockey Michael Davila to win the eighth race on Thursday, November 1 in a time of 1:42.00 for the one mile and seventy yard distance. The 5-year-old gelding, trained by Charlton Baker, defeated the optional claiming allowance field that included 2007 top Finger Lakes male horse nominees Tiger Speech and Mt. Majesty. He has won his last two starts by an average of nine lengths since rearing up at the start and finishing a distant fifth in the $50,000 Genesee Valley Breeders’ Handicap on September 15.
The Finger Lakes Horsemen’s Benevolent and Protective Association’s Annual Awards Ceremony will take place on Saturday. Finger Lakes’ top horses will be honored for their accomplishments during the 2007 meet.
Longshot of the Week: Clyde Cranwell, a professor at Morrisville State College, notched his first training victory of the 2007 meet on Tuesday. Take the Gael, a 24-1 outsider, won in gate- to-wire fashion in the fifth race under jockey Rudy Ignacio. It was the first winners circle visit for Ignacio since guiding Dr. Silver Packet to victory on June 4.
