A look back and ahead…

Horses in the stable of trainer Michael S. Ferraro won five awards at the Finger Lakes Horsemen’s Benevolent and Protective Association’s Annual Awards Ceremony on Saturday. Tiger Speech received the award for best colt, horse or gelding (4-years-old and up), as well as Horse of the Year. Other recipients of awards in Ferraro’s barn include: Friendship Circle, Past Post and Sweet Lorena.

There were large show payouts for all of the top three finishers of Friday’s eighth race. 1-9 favorite Lexington Concord was disqualified from first and placed fourth causing the big prices. Saturday’s Cat was placed first and paid $14.40, $9.80 and $112.50. Musketeer ended up second and returned $10.60 and $74.50. Stormy End was third and paid $266.50.

Longshot of the Week: Trainer Ervin Hill notched his first training victory of the 2007 season when Red Streak won Thursday’s third race by a head. Red Streak ran down Whizbang in the stretch to score his first victory since November 18, 2006. Jockey Pedro Rodriguez guided the 6-year-old gelding to the upset win at odds of 16-1.

News and Notes

Jockey News: Michael Davila was unseated from his mount after the running of the fifth race on Monday. Davila was sore from the fall and took off his mounts for the rest of the day. He did not sustain any serious injuries and returned to ride on Tuesday.
