‘THE VOICE OF FINGER LAKES’ PASSES AWAY
Ross Morton passes away at 74; was only announcer in 46-year history of track

FARMINGTON, N.Y. – For the first time since its inception, Finger Lakes Gaming & Racetrack will be without the memorable voice of track announcer Ross Morton this coming season. Referred to by many as ‘The Voice’, the only track announcer in the 46-year history of the track passed away suddenly Wednesday evening, February 20, near his winter home in Hollywood, Florida.

Morton, 74, began his career as announcer at Finger Lakes in 1962 when the track opened, and went on to call more than 60,000 thoroughbred races at the track throughout his career with his signature deep and rich voice. Earlier in his career during the winter months in Florida, Morton also spent 23 seasons serving as announcer at Gulfstream Park and five more at Hialeah Park.

“Ross was synonymous with Finger Lakes and we are deeply saddened by his sudden passing. Race days at Finger Lakes will not be the same without his distinctive voice welcoming visitors and viewers alike on a daily basis, as he did for the past 46 years. Our thoughts are with his family at this difficult time,” said Finger Lakes Gaming & Racetrack president and general manager Chris Riegle.

Morton began his career in radio in Syracuse before landing the job as announcer at Finger Lakes. He described his most memorable race calls to include many of the greatest legends in thoroughbred racing including Seattle Slew, John Henry, Spectacular Bid, Forego, Holy Bull, as well as Funny Cide’s final race, a victory at Finger Lakes in the Wadsworth Memorial Handicap last July 4th.

In addition to his race announcing, Morton also produced and hosted ‘The Winner’s Circle’, a daily recap of Finger Lakes racing on local television for 25 years.
