A look back and ahead…

Hoosick Falls was the four and one-quarter length winner of the Memorial Day Handicap on Monday under jockey Paul Nicol, Jr. The 6-year-old mare set quick fractions on a clear early lead before finishing the six furlong dash in a time of 1:10.82. It was the twelfth career victory for the $267,448 earner who won the $50,000 Proud Puppy Handicap on October 6, 2007 in the same gate-to-wire fashion for trainer Jeremiah Englehart.

Johnie Bye Night won the $50,000 George W. Barker Handicap for the third consecutive year on Monday. The 6-year-old gelding is now a perfect four for four in six furlong sprint races at Finger Lakes for owner and trainer Charlton Baker. John Davila, Jr. recorded his 30th career stakes win aboard the $264,688 earner and currently leads all Finger Lakes jockeys with 34 victories for the 2008 meet.

Longshot of the Week: Apple Talk looked well beaten by Country Calling midway through the stretch during the running of Monday’s second race. However, the 4-year-old gelding had another gear under jockey Raymond Torres and rallied to defeat his rival by a nose. The Samuel Keyrouze-trainee recorded his first Finger Lakes victory with the off-the-pace upset at odds of 37-1.

Jockey/Trainer News: Jockey Rudy Ignacio notched his first win of the season aboard a first time starter on Saturday. He guided Precise Melody to a five length victory in the seventh race. Trainer Jose Cabrera made his first trip to the Finger Lakes winner’s circle on Sunday after Jet’s Role took the third race.
