A look back and ahead…

Brocco Valley was well rated on the front end by jockey Pedro Rodriguez and scored a five and one-quarter length victory in Sunday’s feature race. The Charlton Baker-trainee achieved his twelfth career victory completing the one mile and seventy yard route in a time of 1:43.27. Last year’s Finger Lakes Horse of the Year, Tiger Speech, finished third in the eighth race while making his first start of the 2008 season. Baker also saddled the winner of the feature race on Tuesday. New York Citi visited the winner’s circle for the fourth consecutive time after cruising to a seven length victory under the direction of jockey Dennis Carr.

Longshot of the Week: On Friday, trainer David Lathrop and jockey Ruben Rojas teamed up to score the biggest upset for the second consecutive week. Darby Book shook loose on the lead to win the second race at odds of 15-1 in his first start since December 1, 2007. Wheelit, also trained by Lathrop, was guided to victory by Rojas last Sunday at odds of 69-1 after returning from a similar layoff as Darby Book.

News and Notes

Jockey/Trainer News: Jockey Elaine Castillo was dismounted during the stretch run of the ninth race on Saturday. X-rays came up negative for any fractures and Castillo is expected to ride all her mounts on Friday. Jackie Grabowski-Stauffer recorded her first win as a trainer on Sunday. Xciting Kitty won the third race for Grabowski-Stauffer by two lengths. With ten wins, Rafael Rohena, Jr. is in the top ten in the Finger Lakes jockey standings for the first time in his career. Rohena started riding at Finger Lakes as an apprentice in 2003.
