Nominees for the top horses of 2008 were announced this week by the Finger Lakes Horsemen’s Benevolent and Protective Association. The Annual Awards Ceremony will take place on Saturday, November 15. The candidates for the Horse of the Year category include Tin Cup Chalice, Afleet Alexandra and Mr. Windjammer.

Scary Bob was able to run loose on the lead and upset Kiss the Cruiser in the sixth race on Tuesday. The 7-year-old gelding made only his third start of the meet for trainer Chris Englehart after a successful 2007 campaign. Before the two and one-half length victory, his last trip to the Winner’s Circle occurred after taking the $50,000 Leon Reed Memorial Handicap on August 12, 2007.

Longshot of the Week: Feel the Flame moved to the barn of trainer Debra Breed after a last place finish in her debut. The 3-year-old filly improved in her second career start and scored a two and three-quarter length victory in Monday’s first race under jockey Ronny Rideout. The bay New York-bred broke her maiden at odds of 12-1.

Jockey News: Jeremias Flores reclaimed his fifth positon in the Finger Lakes jockey standings after recording two doubles this week. Flores currently has 68 victories on the season. Trainer Donna Bireta claimed South Fourth St. on Tuesday for $25,000 for new owner Winning Move Stable. The transaction in the eighth race was the largest of the meet.
