FARMINGTON, N.Y. –The first stakes race of the season for fillies and mares, the $50,000 Susan B. Anthony Handicap, will take place on Sunday at Finger Lakes Gaming and Racetrack.
Jay Em Ess Stable’s By the Light is the 128-pound highweight for the 30th renewal of the six furlong sprint restricted to New York-bred fillies three years old and up. The 4-year-old filly has an impressive resume with ten victories in sixteen career starts, amassing a total of $866,785 in lifetime earnings. She enjoyed success at Finger Lakes as a 2-year-old winning both the $137,825 Lady Finger Stakes and the $269,200 New York Breeders’ Futurity in 2007. Jockey Rudy Rodriguez will be aboard the even-money program choice for trainer Richard Dutrow, Jr.
Sweet Lorena is the 3-1 second choice in the morning line after winning an optional claiming allowance race on May 31 which was designed to be a preparation event for the Susan B. Anthony. She ran third in last year’s running of the annual stake despite setting a fast early pace after being on the shelf for over six months. She was voted top Finger Lakes 3-year-old filly in 2007 after winning seven of nine races that season for trainer Michael S. Ferraro. Jockey Dennis Carr will be in the saddle of the 5-year-old mare owned by Shining Starlite Racing.
Light Tactic finished second by one-half of a length to By the Light in the $84,150 Union Avenue Stakes at Saratoga on August 18, 2008. The 5-year-old mare has been lightly raced with only three starts since winning the $78,000 Personal Bid Stakes on December 2, 2007 at Aqueduct. The Richard Schosberg-trainee has not run since September, 7, 2008 but recorded a bullet workout at Belmont Park on May 31. She zipped three furlongs in :36.27 to prepare for her first start of the 2009 season. The current leading jockey, John Grabowski, will be in the irons of the 6-1 outsider for owner Albert Fried, Jr.
First race post time for Sunday is set at 1:10 p.m. Gaming doors open at 10:00 a.m. and racing gates open at 11:30 a.m.
