A look back and ahead…
On Saturday, Doodlin turned the tables on Yet Again who defeated her by six and three-quarter lengths on June 8. The Charlton Baker-trainee opened up an insurmountable early lead in the sixth race and defeated her rival by two lengths. The victory was the fourth of the season for the 4-year-old filly who was ridden by jockey Pedro Rodriguez.
Paul Nicol, Jr earned his second career New York Derby victory when he guided Pocket Cowboys to a one and one-quarter length triumph in the eighth race on Saturday. Nicol, the leading active Finger Lakes jockey with 3,259 lifetime wins, now has a total of 69 stakes victories.
Longshot of the Week: Cody Grove was an upset winner of Saturday’s fourth race under apprentice jockey Tadious Simpson. The five and one-half furlong victory was the first-ever in a sprint for the 8-year-old gelding who has made a total of 53 starts in his career. The 39-1 outsider scored the win by a neck in his initial start of the 2009 season for trainer Neville Henry.
Jockey News:
Elaine Castillo was injured when she fell during the first race on Monday. Castillo sustained a concussion from the fall and will be sidelined for at least a week. Ruben Rojas was hurt during a spill that occurred during the running of the ninth race on Friday. Saturday, July 18 / $2,500 Handicapping Challenge: Participants select the winners of nine designated races at Finger Lakes and earn points based on the outcome of each race. The top three point earners win cash and the top 25 qualify for the Handicapping Finals in October. The winner of the October finals earns a berth in the 2010 Horseplayer World Series in Las Vegas. Entry forms are free and available at the Player Extras Station in the Upper Grandstand on the day of the event. Entries must be submitted prior to the start of the first contest race.
