FARMINGTON, N.Y. – Stonegate Racing Stables’ Mr. Windjammer rallied in the stretch to win the third renewal of the $50,000 Leon Reed Memorial Handicap. The 4-year-old gelding scored a three-quarter length victory in the six furlong sprint for New York-bred 3-years old and up in a final time of 1:10.77.
The Jonathan Buckley-trainee took advantage of a pace meltdown after fast early fractions were set by Surfing Ian He responded to the urging of jockey Gabriel Suarez in the late stages of the event to secure the minor upset.
"He was the beneficiary of a hot early pace", said Buckley. "That is the type of setup he needs."
The stakes victory was the third in the career of Mr. Windjammer who has amassed a total of $171,675 in lifetime purse earnings. He was the third choice in the wagering and paid $16.00, $5.70 and $9.10. Too Tough Pete finished second and returned $5.40 and $7.80. Surfing Ian faded to be third and paid $14.40.
The $50,000 Leon Reed Memorial Handicap, formerly the Wine Country Handicap, was established in 1973. The name was changed in remembrance of the Finger Lakes employee who tragically lost his life on November 19, 2005.
The next stakes race at Finger Lakes Gaming and Racetrack will be run on Sunday, August 30. The $75,000 New York Oaks, a one mile and one-sixteenth route for 3-year-old New York-bred fillies, is scheduled for that day.
