A look back and ahead…
First-time starters from the barn of trainer Karl Grusmark won both 2-year-old maiden races on Friday. Thundered won the first race for fillies by one and three-quarter lengths and Persian Ruler defeated his male rivals in the sixth race by seven and one-half lengths. Both juveniles were directed to victory by jockey Omar Camejo. The young horses are expected to make their next start on September 7. The Lady Finger Stakes for New York-bred 2-year-old fillies and the Aspirant Stakes for New York-bred 2-year-old colts and geldings are scheduled to be run on Labor Day. The two events each have estimated purses of over $100,000.
Officials at Finger Lakes Gaming and Racetrack announced an increase in superfecta opportunities on the wagering menu
. The popular play will be available in all races that have at least seven betting interests and no coupled entries. The wager that is preferred by many patrons because it provides a chance for big payouts with a ten cent minimum gamble was previously only available in the fifth and final race on the Finger Lakes card. The change will remain in effect for the remainder of the 2009 meet.Longshot of the Week: Chazino scored a one and one-quarter length victory in Monday’s ninth race to give trainer Patrick Crampton his first lifetime win. The 35-1 outsider was guided to victory by jockey Ronny Rideout. Crampton began his career as a conditioner in 2008 with a small stable.
