FARMINGTON, N.Y. – Chris Englehart broke his own record for most wins by a trainer in a single season at Finger Lakes Gaming and Racetrack on Friday. He surpassed his previous best mark of 141 victories that he set in 2006.
Feisty Circle was the 142nd horse saddled by Englehart to visit the Finger Lakes Winner’s Circle this year. The 3-year-old gelding owned by Sheila Englehart took Friday’s third race by seven lengths under jockey John Davila, Jr.
"I just want to thank my help and all my owners," said Englehart after the race.
Englehart began his career at Finger Lakes in 1973. He is on his way to his seventh training title at the Western New York track, and ninth overall. The 54-year-old has achieved 2,254 of his 2,589 career wins at his home track. He is presently sixth in the 2009 North American trainer standings in the category for most wins.
Englehart has a total of 11 stakes victories in his career. His most notable win was in 1989 when Frattare became the only locally based horse to win the Grade III Finger Lakes Breeders’ Cup.
Englehart was born in Canandaigua, NY and continues to reside in the Finger Lakes area. His son Jeremiah is currently fifth in the 2009 Finger Lakes trainer standings with 52 wins.
Live racing continues at Finger Lakes on Saturday with a 12:15 p.m. first post. Fans can participate in the "Hit the Board" eliminator challenge for cash prizes. Plus, drawings will be held for $25 betting vouchers after each of the first eight contest races on Saturday. Gaming doors open at 10:00 a.m. and racing gates open at 11:00 a.m.
