FARMINGTON, N.Y. – The 2010 stakes season got underway at Finger Lakes Gaming and Racetrack on Monday with Mr. Windjammer rallying to win the $50,000 George W. Barker Handicap for the second consecutive year. Trainer Jonathan Buckley and jockey Gabriel Suarez teamed up to take the 27th running of the event after the combination won two of the earlier races on the Memorial Day card.

Mr. Windjammer rated off the early pace set by Pro’s Pal before running down his rival to win by a neck. He completed the six furlong dash for New York-bred 3-year-olds and up in a time of 1:11.17.

The $241,612 earner owned by Stonegate Racing Stables has scored all eight career victories at Finger Lakes including his four stakes wins. He was the only local horse to win multiple stakes races at Finger Lakes last season and is nominated for the honor of 2009 Horse of the Year. The recipient of the award will be announced on at the annual Horsemen’s Benevolent and Protective Association banquet on Tuesday, June 15.

The 5-year-old gelding repeated as the 3-1 second choice in the wagering for the second straight year and paid $8.30, $4.70 and $3.90. Pro’s Pal was second after setting the early fractions and returned $3.70 and $3.00. Too Tough Pete recovered from a poor start to finish third and pay $5.10.

The next stake race at Finger Lakes Gaming and Racetrack will be run on Saturday, June 12. The $50,000 Susan B. Anthony Handicap, a 6-furlong sprint for New York-bred fillies and mares 3-year-olds and up, is scheduled for that day.
