FARMINGTON, N.Y. –The first stake race of the season for fillies and mares, the $50,000 Susan B. Anthony Handicap, will take place on Saturday at Finger Lakes Gaming and Racetrack. The trainer of three of the contenders for Saturday’s eighth race, Michael S. Ferraro, saddled all top three finishers of last year’s running of the six furlong sprint.
Bob’s Dylan will defend her title in the 31st renewal of the stake for 3-year olds and upward. She scored a three length victory over stablemates Afleet Alexandra and Sweet Lorena in the annual handicap last season for owner Blue Star Stable.
The 5-year-old mare has visited the Winners Circle ten times in her career and has amassed a total of $199,563 in purse earnings. She recorded a victory in her most recent start in an allowance race at Presque Isle Downs on May 29. Bob’s Dylan is listed as the 9-2 third choice on the morning line.
The early program choice for the event is also from the barn of Ferraro. Sweet Lorena is the 3-1 favorite for the event and is the 123-pound co-highweight.
The $351,904 earner hit the board in each of the last two runnings of the New York-bred handicap including a third place finish behind stablemate Bob’s Dylan in 2009. Eight of the 6-year-old mare’s 12 wins were accomplished at Finger Lakes. She will be gunning for her first career stake win for owner Shining Starlite Racing.
Smokin Pistol is the youngest horse entered by Ferraro in Saturday’s eighth race. The 4-year-old filly owned by Colleen S. Stable will carry the lightest weight of 113 pounds. She is lacking in experience but has won three of her four starts at Finger Lakes. The longshot is listed at 20-1 morning line. Jockeys are yet to be determined for any of the three horses entered for Ferraro.
First race post time for Saturday is set at 1:10 p.m. Gaming doors open at 10:00 a.m. and racing gates open at 11:30 a.m.
