FARMINGTON, N.Y. – Gold for the Queen scored her second career stakes victory in the 31st renewal of the $50,000 Susan B. Anthony Handicap at Finger Lakes Gaming and Racetrack on Saturday. The bay filly won the annual sprint for New York-bred fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up, by one and one-quarter lengths.
The 4-year-old owned by Francis Paolangeli completed the six furlong distance of the feature race in the second fastest time of the season. Her final time of 1:09.89 was the quickest the annual handicap had been run since 1999.
The $204,136 earner battled for the front throughout the race under jockey Pedro Rodriguez. She then edged clear to secure her fifth career win for trainer Charlton Baker.
"We were concerned about Bob’s Dylan being alone on the lead so she was placed forward", said Baker. "She’s been training so well."
Gold for the Queen recorded her first triumph since taking the $75,000 New York Oaks at Finger Lakes on August 30, 2009. She was the third choice in the wagering and paid $9.90, $6.10 and $4.70. Seasons Wise ran second at odds of 17-1 and paid $18.00 and $7.90. R Betty Graybull rallied to be third and returned $3.00.
The next stakes race at Finger Lakes Gaming and Racetrack will be run on Independence Day. The $50,000 Niagara Stakes, a six furlong sprint for 3-year-old fillies, is scheduled to be run as part of Family Fun Day on Sunday, July 4.
