A look back and ahead…

Les Hulet, the winningest jockey in Finger Lakes history, was in town on Saturday to make an award presentation after the running of the fourth race. The 5-time leading rider amassed a total of 3,816 victories during his career and was inducted into the Finger Lakes Hall of Fame in 1999. He also teamed up with fellow Hall-of-Famer, Fio Rito, in 1981 to capture the Grade 1 Whitney Handicap at Saratoga. Paul Nicol, Jr. is the leading active Finger Lakes jockey. Nicol currently has a sum of 3,347 victories.

The members of Morrisville Stable visited the Winner’s Circle for the first time this season after Try Love won Friday’s fifth race by three and three-quarter lengths for trainer Clyde Dean Cranwell. Cranwell has been the curriculum director at Morrisville State College for approximately four years. The mission of the program is to educate and train a workforce for the racing industry. The pupils get hands-on experience by being involved in the conditioning of the horses. The students participate in all the daily activities such as grooming, exercise riding and race preparation. The horses are acquired by the outfit from donations and private purchases.

Longshot of the Week: Seamus Judge emerged out of a driving rainstorm to win the fourth race on Friday for trainer Beth Miller-Saul. The 5-year-old gelding returned to the Finger Lakes oval on short rest after a last place finish on July 4. The 30-1 longshot was guided to the upset victory by jockey Emanuel De Diego.
