FARMINGTON, N.Y. – Be Bullish won the $50,000 Leon Reed Memorial Handicap at Finger Lakes Gaming and Racetrack on Saturday. The 5-year-old gelding owned by Island Wind Racing completed the six furlong dash for New York-bred 3-years old and up in a final time of 1:11.10.

The $396,253 earner stalked the early pace under jockey John Davila, Jr., then overtook his rivals to win the annual sprint by one and one-quarter lengths. Davila has won the stake, formerly known as the Wine Country Handicap, three of the four times it has been held. The name of the race was changed in 2006 in remembrance of the Finger Lakes employee who tragically lost his life on November 19, 2005.

Top Finger Lakes trainer Chris Englehart saddled the eighth race winner.
It was a special victory for Englehart, who is a relative of the late Leon Reed. The 9-time leading conditioner also won the feature event in 2007 with Scary Bob.

Be Bullish registered his third career stake triumph and paid $6.40, $5.40 and $3.80. Hidden Expense was second at odds of 58-1 and returned $27.20 and $8.40. Turnpike Token was third and paid $7.30.

The next stakes race at Finger Lakes Gaming and Racetrack will be run on Saturday, August 28. The $75,000 New York Oaks is scheduled to be contested at a distance of one mile and one-sixteenth.
WYSL 1040 AM/92.1 FM will provide exclusive live coverage of the route for 3-year-old New York-bred fillies.
