FARMINGTON, N.Y. – Rogue’s Jewel won a narrow decision in the $75,000 New York Oaks on Saturday at Finger Lakes Gaming and Racetrack. She outkicked D’Oratory to score the victory by a nose in the 25th renewal of the stake for New York-bred 3-year-old fillies.
The Carlos Martin-trainee had never competed in an event longer than one mile prior to Saturday’s feature event. She appeared to benefit from the extra yardage and completed the one mile and one-sixteenth route in a time of 1:47.67 under jockey Dennis Carr.
"It unfolded the way we wanted it to," said Carr. "The added distance made the difference for her."
Carr registered his 91st career stake victory. The 41-year-old journeyman is currently third in the 2010 Finger Lakes jockey standings with 48 wins.
Rogue’s Jewel earned her second career triumph for owner Blue Devil Racing Stable. The $110,530 earner was the second choice in the wagering and paid $8.90, $4.30 and $2.80. D’Oratory ran a competitive second despite her maiden status and returned $6.20 and $3.60. Freud’s Notebook could not overcome a relatively wide journey and paid $2.20 for finishing third as the post time favorite.
Two stakes races for New York-bred 2-year-olds are scheduled to be run on Monday, September 6. The $100,000 (est.) Lady Finger Stakes and the $100,000 (est.) Aspirant Stakes are slated as part of Family Fun Day. There will be live music and children’s entertainment as well as a chicken barbeque under the pavilion for $9.95. Beginning at 10am, the first 2,000 Player Extras Members to check in will receive a free Labor Day T-Shirt. First race post time is set at 1:10 p.m.
